What is a Japanese Tattoo?

A Japanese tattoo can actually mean many different things. In the vernacular, a Japanese tattoo does not even have a basic meaning because there are so many different things that under different circumstances could be considered Japanese tattoos.

A good example of something that could be considered a Japanese tattoo is an incense burner. Of course, incense burners can be seen in many different cultures, but depending on the particular person that sees the tattoo, you could easily get someone to believe that such a tattoo is a Japanese tattoo.

That being said, most of the people that talk about Japanese tattoos generally are talking about Japanese characters. In other words, if you get a character of some Japanese script tattooed on your body, you’ve just gotten a Japanese tattoo.

The typical Japanese character script is kanji, a script that is used in writing the Japanese language. Most of the Japanese tattoos available do come out of this script and for that reason you can be very sure that a typical Japanese character will be a kanji character. That being said, there are other script alphabets available in Japanese and if you have a particularly good tattoo artist there is a good chance that they’ll be able to do that particular tattoo for you.

The only word of caution that needs to be uttered when talking about a Japanese tattoo is that you should check the meaning of a particular character before you get the tattoo done. The Japanese lettering system, like the one used in China, is very specific and even a small deviation could completely change the meaning of the Japanese tattoo that you get. Avoid this problem beforehand by checking to make sure that the tattoo that you get actually means what you want it to mean.
